Our Membership Grades and Benefits
a. Fellow
This is the highest and prestigious grade awarded by special Board resolution. The FIFEN grade is awarded to those who have demonstrated significant individual responsibility and exceptional contribution to the fire engineering profession over an extended period, not normally less than 15 years or/and must have been a Member (MIFEN) of the IFE for a minimum of five continuous years. Fellows of the IFE also benefit from esteemed professional recognition in the national fire sector using the post-nominal FIFEN.
b. Member
Member grade membership is appropriate for individuals who hold a fire related degree or equivalent and have been working within the fire sector for at least ten (10) years. This makes Member grade ideal for those who have gained extensive experience and now want the professional recognition to go with it. The membership grade is awarded to those who have demonstrated significant individual responsibility and exceptional contribution to the Fire Service & Fire Engineering profession over an extended period, not normally less than 10 years. Member of the IFE also benefit from esteemed professional recognition in the national fire sector using the post nominal MIFEN.
c. Graduate
Graduate Members must have achieved a recognized and relevant post-secondary school higher national diploma or degree-level qualification and are working towards the goal of a full member status. A Graduate Member should reach a full member status within five years of entering the category.
Graduate grade membership is appropriate for individuals who hold a fire related degree or equivalent and have been working within the fire sector for at least five (5) years. This makes graduate grade ideal for those graduates who have gained experience in Fire Service & Fire Engineering profession and now want the professional recognition to go along with it. Graduate member of the IFEN also benefits from esteemed professional recognition in the national fire sector using the post nominal GIFEN.
d. Technician
Technician grade membership is for those who have approximately two years of experience in the fire sector and meet our academic and other requirements as set out below. Technician grade member of the IFEN also benefits from esteemed professional recognition in the national fire sector using the post nominal TIFEN.
e. Associate
Associate grade membership is for those people who do not meet the academic criteria for Graduate grade and are working towards gaining the necessary education and experience required to meet the full prerequisite to be a Graduate. To progress to an Associate Member, you should be able to show commitment to Fire Service & Fire Protection profession and have a clear understanding of fire and safety through a nationally recognized and accredited continuous professional development training qualification. This grade is for individuals with interest in fire, and those who have started a career in the Fire Service & Fire Protection profession but do not yet meet the experience requirements to move up to Technical membership. Associate grade member of the IFE also benefits from esteemed professional recognition in the national fire sector using the post nominal AIFEN.
f. Student
Student membership is available at a discounted rate for students of fire related studies. Student membership requires proof of current study and is limited to a maximum of five years. If you are studying undergraduate full time, you will be entitled to 50% discounted membership fees, providing you send us proof of current academic year course enrolment.
g. Affiliate Organization
Affiliate Organization membership is available to any organization or company that has an interest in Fire Service & Fire Protection profession and would like to be affiliated with the IFEN. As an Affiliate Organization your business will be listed on the IFE Nigeria Affiliate Organization Directory, be entitled to free posting of fire-related vacancies to our website and use of the IFEN Affiliate Organization logo.
h. Honorary Membership
i. The honorary member of the Institute shall be any member of the Legal Profession, Donors (Individual & Corporate) and Distinguished Citizens within or outside Nigeria who is admitted as such by the Annual General Meeting on the recommendation of the National Executive Committee.
ii. Such an honorary member may attend and, if permitted by the presiding officer, speak at any Annual General Meeting or other meetings of the Institute.
iii. An honorary member of the Institute shall not be required to pay any subscription, dues, or levies, and shall not be entitled to be a National Officer of the Institute
